B: France in 1... Baggaley shot out in lane 2... Vereckei of Hungary in 3. ..Ian Wynne of Great Britain in 4... Larsen in 5. van Koeverden looks good but so does Baggaley. van Koeverden in lane 6 but there's the world champion from Australia and van Koeverden is running in 2nd.

A: Nathan Baggaley has'd a flat regetta and he's trying to prove himself here. He's out very hard, can he stay there? I think Adam van Koeverden got off the line probably BETTER than usual in the context of being PACED today. He got off, he's into position but he didn't give up too much early, physiologically.

B: They say you won't get rid of people at two-fifty with a BLISTERING start, Baggaley would like to PROVE THAT THEORY WRONG. And as we get HALF-WAY through the race IT IS the defending world champion Nathan Baggaley THROUGH a second ahead of van Koeverden then it's Vereckei and Larsen OFF THE PACE.

A: Larsen charges late in the race so don't count him out YET but he is WAY OFF at this point in time and it LOOKS LIKE a two-person race but there's still a lot of lake in front of us.

B: AND VAN KOEVERDEN PULLING UP ON BAGGALEY. Still no word from Larsen. Vereckei starting to move, in lane 3. Ian Wynne, going home for Great Britain in 4. But it's still Baggaley.

AND VAN KOEVERDEN CHALLENGING NATHAN BAGGALEY.

A: Van Koeverden has momentum and I think Baggaley went out too hard. He's dying, he's thrown in the ANCHOR.

hey guys,
been a while yea? how're u guys? jus here to say thank you guys for giving me a great time at canoe. yea minus all the times of dissent, of hurt from one another, from certain misunderstandings, from many failed tests and exams (for me at least); nonetheless, jc was still pretty meaningful wasn't it? :)

how've u all been? would be nice to hear from u guys agn. maybe we can meet up on our first book out? tho mr go doubt me being able to book out. haha. hope i dun screw out and talk too much inside. yup we can prob put our bald heads together for a game of mahjong or a usual talk cock session.

went back w loo to school to reminiscise our land trainings abit. it was pretty degen. but it still brought back the memories at the pull up bars and going to the pe block after class for training. the queueing up to do pull ups and stuff and the stinking ppl. haha k it's the shirt :P anw, we went to macritchie after and manage to row abit. the j2 guys are a pretty hardworking lot. anw, do go back to give your support should you be free? and visit huang jiao lian too, he's v handsome :) and the teachers too.

yup guys, do keep in contact yea? enjoy yourselves at tekong. thanks for putting up with all my nonsense for the past two years. it's been an honour to train alongside you guys. continue to apply all that we've learnt. im sure we won't forget them :)

the submarine selwyn

pay, selwyn and i went to swim on sunday. so pay was teaching selwyn some basic techniques of the freestyle and stuff. so pay asked him to try to stretch his hand as far out as possible. he said that by doing so u can stay afloat. so selwyn tried it out. after awhile pay nudged me and ask me go underwater and see it. so i went underwater and all i saw was selwyn stretching his arms as far out as possible and trying to float. his whole body was straight and floating. but he kept sinking until he sank to the bottom of the pool then he surfaced and asked, " HOW COME LIKE THAT ONE!" and pay and i just started laughing.

strength is not needed when polishing

selwyn and i bought our leather shoes earlier today. so selwyn came over to my house to borrow shoe polish. so i started polishing my shoes. and selwyn started on his. after awhile he noticed that his shoes weren't getting any brighter..but for some reason..getting darker instead. so he decided to polish even harder. but to no avail. the shoe kept getting darker. so selwyn used all his strength on this small area and kept on trying. meanwhile i was polishing my shoes when he suddenly exclaimed," omg why is my shoe black now?" so i went to take a look at his shoe and burst out laughing. at the front of his shoe where he focused all his energy on was this black spot. and the other parts where he was polishing was a darker shade from the part where he didnt polish. so we found out that he actually rubbed away the light paint that was sprayed onto his shoes to make it a light brownish colour. but being the strong selwyn as he is, there's nothing a little more strength cant solve. HAHA.

Things to note after the marathon

1. Don't follow chio bu (for too long)

After sort of 'following' one for about 20km, I overtook her and then got a bad groin cramp. The cramps killed me at the end of the run. :(

2. Take power gel only when you're near the end.

The organisers provided a free power gel for each runner at the 26km mark. I ate the power gel not long after they gave me, thinking it will cure my cramps. It did. I also got a second burst of speed until 30+ km but at the end, I felt like crap with no energy. Power gel is like red bull; it gives you (temporary) wings....

3. Train for your marathon if you want to do it properly.

Tips on running a very long distance in an organised race

1. Run your own race

2. Pace somebody

Look for somebody you like to look at, e.g. chio bu. But be careful not to stay too close or you might be accused as a stalker.

3. Look at the scenery

I think Singapore has got lots of intertwining terss which can make a nice art piece if you take a good look at it. But just be careful of what you step on.

5. Go through a tune in your head

If you don't carry an MP3 for runs you can just randomly come up with a tune that's interesting and keeps you going.

For example

You SHOULD get to the end of the race before the 9.99999999999E99th time.

6. Hydrate at every water stop

Very very very important to keep hydrated. A sip of water (especially if it's sweet) can keep you sane for some time.

Always keep your head up and look far ahead. Think positive. I think pessimistic thoughts are very very dangerous because they multiply very quickly especially in a long run. A 'pain' can lead to another and to another and it goes on... Don't let negative thoughts get your head.

9. Talk to yourself

I think this is quite fun and it can be very motivating, especially if you feel damn lonely even when there are hundreds of people around you. It can make you look a bit crazy though.

10. Run your own race

Finally, if you can't get yourself to complete the distance, perhaps you can help others by motivating them. Wear a shirt with a sign on the back that says, "I'm faster than you" or "I'm 2 fast 2 furious for you." The bib which the standard chartered run gives you is perfect for writing such things! (You are supposed to write your reason to run on the bib and paste it on the back of your shirt)

Hey i'm back with a (really small, actually) update on chalet news.

It seems for no there aren't any objections to the chalet, so now the discussion here is on the date and venue.

Tentatively it's 10th - 12th Dec 2007, however there have been suggestions to push it earlier to 5th to 7th Dec, right after Grad night.

Now I know most of you will be too lazy to sms anything if you disagree or what not, so i'm suggesting this now: if you have any problems with the chalet being on 5th to 7th December 2007, right after Graduation Night, then sms me right away. Otherwise, i'll inform everyone that chalet dates would be changed to the above already. thanks.

P.S. cute girls, you may join us in our chalet, we will surely treat you well ;p.

hi guys. all work and no play makes canoeists dull people.

so i propose a games day on fridays!

we should all mug in library after friday afternoon to mug until we have enough people to play some games, then around 5pm ++ we shall play games until we are tired.then we shower and have dinner together.

games that we might likely play: frisbee(jameson says its for losers), basketball, soccer, captain's ball?? aiyar anything la.

think about the psycho motor(cyclomotor) skills that canoeing has robbed u!

ps. canoe girls are all welcome. friends of canoeists are also welcome. in fact everyone is welcome!

Chalet

hey guys, let's have a chalet after A's

We didn't manage to have one last year, due to Laos and all, so let's have a good one this year!

Everyone, please come! It's much easier to book now that we're all 18 (or do we have to be 21? I forgot haha)

I think it'll be quite wasted if we just ended it all with saying "bye bye"s after A's are over. And meeting only 3 months after that just to collect results or something.

Justin says we have to book early so we won't have a problem with room allocation next time. So please reply fast and IMMEDIATELY after seeing this blog post (just drop me an sms at 91510066 if you haven't got my number.) After reading multiple posts, emails and talking with some, the qn many of us are asking ourselves now is "was it worth it...did we sacrifice 1 and a half years of our lives, our grades, our social lives all for nothing...was it worth it?" To each his own, we might all have different answers but for me the answer is a resounding YES!

I won't be gg on to write another long post simply because i feel tat all that is needed to be said has already been said but i just want to add something tat i feel all of us have missed out.
Yes we might have failed in this competition and many feel it has all come to naught. But aren't you forgeting something?

If you hadn't joined canoeing, would you have known you could push yourself this far? For me (an ex-shooter cum interacter), I was never pushed to my limits. After the j1 land trainings and canoe camp, i found a new side of me. It aided in my self discovery...to know tat I can accomplish something i never thought I could was really gratifying. I felt that I had achieved something great (greater den getting an A for exams which I haven't done for a long time)

If you hadn't joined canoeing, would you got to know your teammates? B4 joining, I only knew Kane and JC well. Now, I can safely say tat 20 years down the road, we will all still be frens. Even better frens den my classmates and tat's becoz we have shed blood and tears for one another, making us all sworn brothers in a sense. To Kong, thx for helping with my strokes when we were still K2 partners. Even though my strokes were so suck and I caused most of the tilts, you never abandoned me (until coach asked you to haha) and stuck with me without getting pissed off with my inadequacy. To Shenglin, you were my greatest teacher. Even though we rowed like only 3 times together, you taught me more den everyone else in the team put together. You are definitely my idol. To Jameson, we only had the fortunate chance of getting to know each other better after i went on to do K1. I dare say you were the most caring one in the water...nv letting me out of your sight even though you could have often just rowed off without me. You would even follow me all the way to the toilet during water training breaks even if you didn't need to and I salute you! HIGH FIVE! To Kenneth Loo, you are very understanding and even though your talent, grades and hard work are far far above me, you always took the time to listen to me bitch about my inadequacy and give me advice. You have been a real motivation for me. To KY, you are the greatest captain ever. You kept the whole team together and gave 110% and even your social life for us. I know of no one else who would have pulled off wat you did. To Eliza and Hannah (if you are reading this), you were the only ones who bothered to stop and look during water trainings to correct my stokes and I am deeply thankful to have teammates like you gals. To the blue moon gang (Seetoh and Guoren especially), thx for all the times you decided to walk with me to LIM BO SENG to buy Sportade to drink. To Selwyn, thx for counting out loud when we are during warmups. It would have never been the same without you. I am also deeply sorry for making fun of you the most in the entire team and i think Boon can testify to tat...NOT! To Bernard, Chiam, Seetoh, Guoren, Boon and any other who were regular lanners after trainings, thx for providing an outlet to destress and make fun of each other for being nub at DOTA. To Tim, thx for always making sure everything in the shed is in order. You have been a really responsible quartermaster. Lastly, I wanna thank Kane, Jingcong for always being there for me and giving me advice on canoeing on the way home after every training.

If you hadn't joined canoeing, would you have got the hot bods you all have now? Even Selwyn has abs after his long runs every morning. Its there Selwyn dun let anyone tell you its not. They are just freaking jealous.

If you hadn't joined canoeing, would you have gone Laos and did all the kok and some hard work for the Laotian pple? Getting a better perspective on the world and how pple lived in other parts of the world?

If you hadn't joined canoeing, would you have got to know your current galfrens? (only applicable to selected members such as pple who miss their drugs)

If you hadn't joined canoeing...But lucky for me, I did join canoeing and I did discover myself and I did meet frens who I know will be there for me no matter wat. ONLY THING IS I NO GALFREN!!! And i quote Jameson "I WANT CHIO BU!" haha.

I'm sure tat 20 years down the road, our wounds will heal and we would have a better perspective of the world by then and we would look back and be proud to say that we are RAFFLES CANOEISTS!

Disappointed, but not regretful

I guess the most of us who is reading this post already knows our result for 2007 National Schools Canoe Competition. Forgive me, those who don't, because I don't feel like typing the result here.

Here I stand, sad, disappointed, indignant. The former 2, it is easy to understand why I am feeling so. But indignant? Why am i feeling pissed? This time, my anger is not directed at myself, for having lost this round of competition, not even being able to get pass the heats round. Raffles Canoeing compromises not only of our current batch of student-canoeists, but also of her teachers, her coach and her seniors. I believe that the most of us, especially the competitors, have been left feeling dejected at our final result. Despite this, we have kindly-straightforward comments reaching us: hey, your result is not good enough! hey you didn't work hard enough! hey you're lousy and you can't even keep a boat heavy enough to qualify! hey! hey! hey! These comments would have been fine if they didn't carry with them the tone of despise, of saying that "we had not worked hard enough, and we were not motivated enough".

To me, such comments served only one purpose: they denied, put down all the sweat and pain that we had undertaken the past year and a half. I don't care if the comments were directed at only a few people; the moment anyone else but the competitors ourselves got angry at our result already shows little the commenter had shown any form of understanding. All they cared about was results. They are denying those times I saw Kane contorting his face and pushing his limit, those times I saw Kenneth Kong running the extra rounds because "my running is some sh*t now", those times I hear Sheng Lin say "Come on guys, lets go!", those times I see Shawn practising his strokes with anything he could find, those times I hear about Timothy cycling to and fro and running his marathons, those times Bernard tried to kill me with "one more round" for several times, those times I see Cheryl come early in the morning to do some morning training before going for lessons, those times I see Javine coming back from a 10km run around Macritchie Reservoir, those times I hear Jing Cong shouting colourful language to spur himself on, those times I see Boon Shing wheezing from after runs, and lots more I have not mentioned. Do you not see what's missing inside what I've just mentioned? Water training!

Other students in RJC feel that us training 4 times a week seems to be quite massive already, especially for student standards. They do not understand. Of these 4 trainings, only 2 of them goes into water time. Almost every canoe cca in other schools have them at least 3 times weekly. That works out to (AT THE VERY LEAST) 50% MORE water training days than us. NJC canoeists have around 200% more water training days than us. So you say they don't have a life. I'm telling you they do, and have it well too. Think about it. Our water trainings are already held so few times a week. What, as a coach, would you do to make up for the lost time? Train more on those days of course. And not just a little bit more. More, enough to make up for that 50%, 100%, 200% loss in time. How efficient do you think those trainings are? Do you think that RJC canoeists are machines who can register every training optimally, without feeling the effects of exhaustion? Do you think it is more effective to study for 5 hours straight for one day in a week than it is to study 1 hour consistently for 5 days of each week? How long do you think your attention span can last you?

Realise that those 4 boats (i consider James' too) that qualified for the finals are those belonging to the talented. Kenneth Loo, Kaiyang, James, Marcus and Shenghao. Yes, they are talented, and they trained very hard too. But even Kenneth was toppled from his position of 1st from last year, and Ky didn't get the positions he was expected to get. WHY?

The world is unfair, and there is nothing any of us can do to change that. Everyone is born with varying talents. The winner of a competition is always the one expected to have done the most hard work. If you won, it means you worked hard. If you lost, it just means you haven't put in the effort that the winner had. BULLCRAP. Don't you believe that for once. I am not afraid to say that I am very untalented in canoeing, and still the result this time around was a crushing defeat to me. To me, it had been a symbolic competition, to say that those without talent, as long as they worked hard, much harder than those who with it, can still stand a fighting chance to gain a medal. It is not difficult to imagine that the past few days had been one of the lowest moments in my life. I sacrificed my grades for canoeing, and canoeing failed me. I was not able to bring hope to those who had looked at me and said: "hey, he's untalented but he still made it! what's up with that? can I stand a chance too as long as I fought hard?". I was no able to fulfill the expectations that had been placed upon me. I had underestimated my opponents. I used to believe that men should never stop daring to dream and work towards it, that destiny was always within one's grip.

And I still believe so. But it truly is difficult when the available options open to you doesn't allow you to do so. And thus, I get very, very angry when others, outsiders, look at us and said: "whoa, this team hadn't trained hard enough, therefore they lost." I, for one, am very proud of this team I am in. Everyone's sweat and blood will stay in my heart for as long as my memory serves, and longer. Be disheartened not when others look upon you and say that you have not worked hard, for they know not the tough times we had been through, and out of. If they refuse to acknowledge our effort, then there is nothing much left for us to do. Those times we had fought hard and still gotten a fourth in heats, semis, know that we had done our best with what available resource we had open to us, and that immense competition we faced was also conversely experienced by our opponent who will in turn respect us for who we are. The world cares only about results, but that is because they do not know us well. Results can never clearly reflect who we are as persons, because only those of us, your teammates, who had been through that thick and thin with you, will understand that the times we had, all the sweat, had all been worthwhile. That, and not the perspective of the world, is what truly matters in the end.

i guess its over isnt it? nationals was such a faraway event and now its all just over the feelings just surreal. and after canoeing has been sucha big part of our lives, to think there wont be anymore early sat morns at macritchie and long runs (which i usually dun do) is almost painful. i guess we dont realise how much we need somethings until we actually lost it. i believe everything happens for a reason. not being cliche or anything but we failed for a reason. to each his own the reason differs but i learned something, i felt something i nv did before, the spirit of our team and it dawned upon me how individualistic i actually am. and the strength of this spirit surpasses that of individual glories and achievements and for once, i am proud of being in this team. we dint exactly gave the others a 'run for their money' or wadever but we all left better people. and i believe wadever we did for the past 1.5 yrs will go a long way in moulding each of us into men, responsible and driven husbands, CEOs, doctors, lawyers,(firemen) . just know when the As are over and we all disperse to our various callings all over the world, we once stood together as friends, team mates, brothers. that we were once all equal and we once suffered and fought together. let us never forget this because such a thing will never happen again, we only live once.

Please remember to bring lots of water to the location, be it on sat or race day itself. The sole water cooler is next to the public toilet, about 10,000m away from where we would be stationed. Ok, actually it's probably only about 400m. Anyway, it's quite far away, and there's only one of it, so i don't think you wanna walk all the way there on the day itself just to queue up for water, like some water rationing exercise.

For morning racers: Be aware that the sun might be facing you when you race, so sunglasses might come in handy.

For afternoon racers: the day can really get quite hot, and though there are lots of trees, they don't provide the same cover like they do at macritchie, so be aware of the temperatures. try to mentally condition yourself to be able to take the heat without being distracted for your race.

Ok, what I just typed is quite redundant, but anyway this blog needs more posting. No one seems to be posting much anymore, cept' loo.

Hi people, the following are some photos we took at Bedok Reservoir today. Take a look and get a feeling of how it's like from our perspective. :)

Some of the structures were there for some Dragon Boat Racing Competition that took place over the weekend. They might not be used for the Canoeing Competition next week.

The finish line. The distance between the buoys and the "line" is distinctively shorter than that of the others. We estimate this distance to be 50m while that between the buoys from 500m to finish line to be 150m. Hence, there will be like 1 line of buoys at the 500m, another at 350m, another at 200 while the last at 50m which is they picture you see above. By the way, they only use BIG BUOYS as the indicators so do try to avoid them when paddling. They are like the ones we have at 250m, 500m, 750m and 1000m at MR.

This should be the enclosure where we will be keeping the boats (I think). Maybe it's not. Just speculating cause it's the only "fenced-up" area we saw.

As you can see from the photos, the buoys are freaking far apart. So far that I can't take a photo with the two lines of buoys inside.

A view from the approximate 750m mark. We not sure how far we have walked.A view from the end of the start of the race lanes. (1000m mark) Archtyranno and I noticed that there weren't obvious big buoys for separation and the 1000m mark. They used some small floating white pieces instead. In addition, there are only two lines of buoys from the 1000m mark to the 500m mark. The arrangement of the buoys is quite weird.

Whoo, in total I think we walked more than 2km, from start to finding the bus stop to go home. Haha...

Also, the toilet and water cooler is located quite a distance from the pontoon, like 800m? It's further than at MR so if you want to answer nature's call, move faster.

EDIT: not much, just that on race day (or actually, even on sat when we go over), remember to bring lots of water. The water cooler is really quite far (next to the toilet, not counting a potential make-shift one) from where we would be stationed. And, it's really quite hot in the afternoon from 2 to 4+++, so afternoon racers be aware of that. And for morning races, i think the morning sun should be facing you when you are racing so if can, try to get a pair of sunglasses. and for those who dunno, Archtyranno wa ore.

Summary of the Holidays + CTs

We went out to watch movies (ZODIAC)

We trained until degen max.

This was the last week of the holidays where we felt the CT + Trng HEAT. After that training we had WEEK 5! High 5!

We mug in school at our favourite haunt - the windy area - where you can catch glimpses of "people" walking/running around. :)

Then we had our CT week where the location to mug was the library.

hey guys, saw this on wikipedia, thought i'd just share it with everyone. this was voted as the best sporting moment in the twentieth century by Sports Illustrated.

The "Miracle on Ice" is the popular nickname for the men's ice hockey game in the 1980 Olympic Winter Games, in which a team of amateur and collegiate players from the United States beat the long-dominant and heavily-favored Soviet Union on February 22, 1980, in Lake Placid, New York.

The day before the match, columnist Dave Anderson wrote in the New York Times, "Unless the ice melts, or unless the United States team or another team performs a miracle, as did the American squad in 1960, the Russians are expected to win the Olympic gold medal for the sixth time in the last seven tournaments."

The United States team entered the competition seeded seventh in the final round of 12 teams that qualified for the Lake Placid Olympics. The team was composed of collegiate players and amateurs, some of whom had signed contracts to play in the National Hockey League. The Soviet Union was the favored team. Though classed as amateur, Soviet players essentially played professionally in a well-developed league with excellent training facilities. They were led by legendary players in world ice hockey, such as Boris Mikhailov, a right-wing and team captain; Vladislav Tretiak, considered by many the best ice hockey goaltender in the world at the time; as well as talented, young, and dynamic players such as defenseman Viacheslav Fetisov. In exhibitions that year, Soviet club teams had gone 5-3-1 against NHL teams, and a year earlier the Soviet national team routed the NHL all-stars 6-0 to win the Challenge Cup.

The Soviet and American teams were natural rivals due to decades-old Cold War disputes. In addition, President Jimmy Carter was at the time considering a U.S. boycott of the 1980 Summer Olympics, to be held in Moscow, in protest of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, which began the year before. Carter eventually decided in favor of the boycott.

On February 9, the two teams met for an exhibition match in order to practice for the upcoming competition. The Soviet Union won 10-3.

In Olympic group play, the United States surprised many observers with their physical, cohesive play, starting with a 2-2 tie against Sweden and followed by a stunning 7-3 victory against a strong team from Czechoslovakia. The U.S. team finished with four wins and one draw to advance to the medal round. In the other group, the Soviets stormed through their opposition undefeated, often by grossly lopsided scores – knocking off Japan 16-0, the Netherlands 17-4, and Poland 8-1 – and easily qualified for the next round. Sweden and Finland also qualified for the medal round.

The home crowd, reinforced by the US team's improbable run during group play and the Cold War "showdown" mentality, were in a patriotic fervor throughout the match, waving U.S. flags and singing patriotic songs such as "God Bless America." As in several previous games, the U.S. team fell behind early. Vladimir Krutov deflected a slap shot by Aleksei Kasatonov past U.S. goaltender Jim Craig to give the Soviets a 1-0 lead, and, after Buzz Schneider scored for the United States to tie the game, the Soviets rallied again with a Sergei Makarov goal.

Down 2-1, Craig improved his play, turning away many Soviet shots before the U.S. team had another shot on goal. (The Soviet team had 39 shots on goal in the game, the Americans only 16.) In the waning seconds of the first period, Dave Ch ristian fired a desperate slap shot on Tretiak. The Soviet goalie saved the shot but misplayed the rebound, and Mark Johnson scooped it past the goaltender to tie the score with one second left in the period. The frustrated Soviet team played the final second of the period with just three players on the ice, as the rest of the team had retired to their dressing room for the first intermission.

Tikhonov replaced Tretiak with backup goaltender Vl adimir Myshkin to start the second period, a move which surprised many players on both teams. Fetisov later identified this as the "turning point of the game." The switch seemed to work at first, as Myshkin allowed no goals in the second period. Aleksandr Maltsev scored on a power play to make the score 3-2 for Russia.

Johnson scored again for the U.S., 8:39 into the final period, firing a loose puck past Myshkin to tie the score just as a power play was ending. Only a couple shifts later, Mark Pavelich passed to U.S. captain Mike Eruzione, who was left undefended in the high slot. Eruzione fired a shot past Myshkin, who was screened by his own defenseman. This goal gave the U.S. a 4-3 lead with exactly 10 minutes to play in the contest.

Craig withstood another series of Soviet shots to finish the match, though the Soviets did not remove their goalkeeper for an extra attacker. As the U.S. team tried desperately to clear the zone (move the puck over the blue line, which they did with seven seconds remaining), the crowd began to count down the seconds left.

Hey everyone

I don't know how many of you actually come back to this blog anymore. But I guess that's ok, we all move on with our lives at one time or another. It's perfectly understandable. I don't even know how many will take the time to read this at the end of the day. But I guess that's ok too.

For us J2s, anyone can see that morale is at an all-time low now. For most of us, if not all, we find ourselves trying to work towards a goal that doesn't seem to be shedding any of its light. To be frank, most of us were utterly crushed when NJCC occurred some time ago and resulted in disappointment. In the recent Women's Open competition, we were greeted with 2 star-performances by our very own Javine and Cheryl, and Yang2, who got k2 500m Gold and T1 500m Gold respectively. Let us all extend our warmest congratulations to them. However, today's post is not about such as these. Today, we look at those of us who were left behind in the fast-surging stream of canoeing competitiveness.

A trip to the doctor today revealed a partially-torn tendom on my fourth finger, right hand, which coincidently resides very near where i had previously broken my bone. The doctor insisted on a 3 to 4 week rest period to allow the tendom to heal back. Yes, 3 to 4 weeks. This close to our nationals, barely 20 trainings left, barely a month and a half, and i'm being forced to rest for a silly little muscle group that allowed itself to be over-exterted. Great. Add that to the fact that, truthfully speaking, my rowing skills haven't actually been up to par yet. Add that to the fact that my strength in proportion to my heavy mass isn't even close to that which you see on other t2-rowers. I'm not being delusional, neither am i being overly-critical. To be blunt on myself, my rowing now really sucks.

I guess that now, cutting away all that one-track minded stupidity in just wanting to get at least a something achieved in my life, a lot of you might be feeling the same way as i do: mentally-tired, unmotivated, uninspired, perhaps even bored. Nationals are close enough to scare us, but far enough to keep us feeling repulsed, feeling "what in the world am i doing? should i be wasting my time training when i can go off to do other things which i can do better at, or at least be focusing on my studies? Student athlete, student comes first, right?". It's true that there are a lot of monsters out there. We see those monsters speeding past us and feeding us their wash, almost as if just to turn around and stick a tongue out at us. And no matter how hard we try, it just seems too difficult to catch up to them. This might be even harder for J1s, who may find it even harder to even be able to compete this year.

Here comes the hard part: so what do we do now? Where do we go from here? Even 3rd placing seems to ever be moving away from our reach. Are we the batch that finally lets RJC Canoeing drop out of placings, out of sight, out of mind?

Do we give up?

That question was rhetorical. Please check yourself if you haven't already answered a resounding "NO" in your mind, at least. I'm not an inspirational writer, nor am i someone particularly masochistic, or even anymore diligent than anyone. I'm not talented, in fact i'm UNtalented at many things. I'm your sub-average guy, who don't have the nuance to consider when to start giving up on the things that i really want imprinted in my life. It's not that i'm not being realistic. I know that a lot of you have thoughts in your mind that say "I know i can't do well anymore, so what's the point?" or "i'm trying so hard but i'm not getting the results i want!". Let me tell you, as unworthy a being such as i, that these are very dangerous thoughts. They make us lose focus. They give us a false sense of reality, a false sense of feeling dis-illusioned. They make us give up. It may be true that at the end, we may not even have the slightest chance of winning. No one can guarantee anything. But what does it matter? For now, we become exhausted after each day. But what happens after we're through? After we're done, do we say "oh, i was a canoeist" and in our hearts tell ourselves "but i didn't do my best for the win because i was going to lose anyway", or do we say "I was a canoeist, i didn't win anything, but I gave it my best shot and forced a tough competition down the throats of my competitors". It doesn't seem all too appealing now, but it is my belief, you can choose to take it or not, that when you look back at times like these, it wasn't the medal, or the lack of it, that mattered, but how much you actually put into it that was translated into how much you were actually able to get out of it in the end that did. You wouldn't say "i was just a canoeist", but "I am a canoiest. I am a crazy fellow who put 2 years of hard work into something which i may not actually get something tangible out of at the end." And, strangely, i doubt it only applies to me, that because of that, you would feel a strange sense of pride for what you did, and not what you received.

It's not easy to picture all of this now. A lot of you would be reading this in disbelief now, some of you maybe already left this huge bag of words for other activity. But for those of you who choose to stay to read on, let me say this: if you believe in yourself, believe in your teammates who were there, who is there, who may or may not be there for you in future, then have no regrets in your actions. Work towards what you believe in. Be an inspiration to those around you. Even if you don't receive any official statement, anything tangible, at the end of it all, you can safely say you had already gotten all the good you could get out of life in 2 years of Canoeing.

I don't know if this deserves a post of its own, but i just wanna say a BIG THANK YOU for those who supported our group at the auditions today, including those who didn't come down physically. Especially THANKS to those did take so much time off to watch our performances (including LooLoo who couldn't make it in time; sorry but we didn't anticipate that the audition would begin so early either). Really, each of your encouragements were what allowed me to sing today :)

I'm very sure that our entire group, archtyranno@hotmail.com (name creditted to HUANG KAIYANG), consisting of the abovementioned, Bingxuan and Zhenghong, would also like to extend our thanks to everyone who rooted for us, especially those who took time off to listen to us rehearse (inclusive of Bernard and Boon Shing). This entry is meant to be stupid and discuss weird fetishes that could be present in our society...

1) You heard of pple who enjoy the feeling of pain? This individual takes it a step further. He likes to control his piss and crap and enjoys the feeling that would normally make a normal person start rolling on the floor with a contorted face and shouting vulgarities. Constipation is a joy for him! He simply loves it when what comes out is either rock hard or very very watery and gasy. SICKKKKKKK....Getting piles is a bonus for him.

2) Most pple like to be clean shaven. But this individual likes to keep his hair long and bushy. Yes and i'm not only talking about head hair, i'm talking bout hair all round his body, armpits, legs, belly button, ect. He thinks that hair is manly and may occasionally use gel, wax and hair cream to style his nt so public hair.

3) Statistics have shown that 92% of the general population are nose pickers. So digging your nose is quite normal. However, out of the 92%, 8% of them take a step further because they are so considerate. Instead of the usual flicking or wiping it on somebody else's shirt or bag or bus seat, this considerate guy gets rid of the rubbish he expels by eating his nose shit. Tasty!

4) You often see this rude person burping continuously for pure amusement and it irritates u...However a wise man once said, "Better out the front den out the back.". A more stupid fetish would be to purposely eat lots of fart inducing foods to fart continuously because you like that feeling of farting and it makes u go "ahhhhh...." or because you like irritating pple for pure amusement.

First, enter your nearest bookshop. Go to the information section and find a book titled: Totally useless information. Take it and sit down along the aisle. You and your frens can read and get to know some totally useless information which is quite cool and fun. You will get to know how ignorant u actually are...

Coz tat day Jing Cong, me and another fren went to MPH when we waiting for some other frens and we started reading stuff. Jing Cong was reading a book on farting which is really a waste of money if u buy it coz it costs 20 bucks and its super thin and has crap inside like a page on "Famous People who have farted".

Due to the recent turn of events, where certain respectable innocent canoeists have become sneaky and cunning, here's a post to highlight the benefits of being a monk or NGO(NO GALFREN ORGANISATION)...and the detriments and implications of being cunning...

Firstly, you become poorer coz u end up gg out more and paying double. Rmb that pair of shoes u wanted, that branded bag u sought after, the concert u wanted to attend? Thx to oppurtunity cost, yes, the galfren comes first so you can't get those things anymore...

Secondly, your time is limited so you have to sacrifice gg out with your clique, playing com games, even sch work for your galfren. For example, if some guy in a blue shirt decided to abandon his CCA frens to go eat lunch with his potential galfren after training...

Thirdly, it opens up an avenue for scandals. For example, if you already have a target galfren in mind and you still go around groping or carassing other pple's shoulders abroad, pple will think you are a bastard and a flirt...especially that gal you really liked...who may have liked you back and wanted to give u a hug b4 you left abroad to do CIP...

Fourthly, next year is our A levels. So we should be mugging our ass off and nt get distracted. Dun give yourself the excuse tat gg to study at the library with tat special gal is gonna be productive. STOP LYING TO YOURSELF! And stop peeking at the gal when u pretend to read your notes in the library. She's nt so dumb as nt to realise you are forever stuck at maths notes chapter 0 surds and indices...

Fifth, you are gg army after 1 year anyway. Tat's y even Shenglin the romantic canoeist became a monk after entering RJC. Its nt that he looks like an ogre or a troll, he actually has a hot bod and a cute smile and many gals want him. But he is so focused on his studies and occasionally vandalising property, killing wildlife and destroying the natural ecosystem that he finds it meaningless to be as sneaky and cunning as other canoeists who shall nt be named here.

Of course, there are the exceptional few who can balance their studies and relationships well...pple like JUSTIN CHIAM :)

Apart from gg training REGULARLY and studying TIRELESSLY, he actually has time to establish a strong relationship with 加思敏, and play com games relentlessly. I respect him...加思敏 is such a lucky gal to have him! But this is no surprise coz Justin is so handsome, so smart, so capable, so friendly, so attractive, so morally prudent, so helpful, so charming...it will be no surprise if he ended up being more successful den even ky_kooldude.

loads of fun AND do your part for the community at the same time? The Youth Club @ Boon

Lay is organizing a New Year's Eve countdown party for the Boon Lay neighbourhood. This will

be a large event with an expected turnout of 20 000.

With the exciting theme of Firing up the Heartlands, Countdown 2007 @ Boon Lay promises

various activities such as performances by Mediacorp artistes, games, singing, dancing, street-

partying, foam-partying, a street bazaar and lucky draw opportunities! It is organized with the aim of

bringing the communities in the Western part of Singapore closer together.

had a good laugh? anyway here's a tip to those fellow students still taking that cursed subject. if ure one that hands in homework late with like 2-3 compos due, u can try writing a "not-so-good" essay. followed by a normal one. the marks u get for the next are considerably better despite the actual stnd of the essay being quite bad.

oh the next compo was suppose to be a sequel to it, but figured my poor teacher would prob get a heart attack if she continued reading. mm.. maybe if im real bored ill write it

one fine day, kane and jameson capsized.

so me and jingcong paddled to them and rescued them. while kane tried to get on the boat, he slipped and fell and cut his sole. he was anxious to get right back to the pontoon as it was a bad cut.

kane: eh faster get back to the pontoon! my leg is bleeding! im dying!
jameson: eh. why my boat got smoke one?
kane: faster! my leg bleeding!
jameson to jingcong: no. u see...why got smoke one?
kane: FASTER! leg bleeding!
jameson: how come got smoke?!
kane: JUST GO! my leg bleeding! im dying!
jameson: but my boat got smoke!

so once they pushed off from our boat, me and jingcong were laughing so hard, we capsized too.

kane: wah lau boon! my leg is bleeding! why u capszie!
jameson: eh shit. why my boat still have smoke one?

and they return the favour by rescuing us. then tim chow comes along.

tim chow: hey u all need help?
jingcong: no tim chow! dont come here! its a cursed place, u'll cap.
tim chow: oh like bermuda triangle? *plops* (tim chow capsizes)
