Our C-rowers @ National Canoeing Championship

Chiam & Seetoh. I got there at 0955 only to see them just cross the finish line :( Pardon me if the photo isn't excellent, it was snapped in a rush, so I couldn't adjust the settings.

Here's Loo-loo... maybe his incredible proficiency at C1 is partly due to lovey-dovey messages that so happen to be in his SMS outbox? Lol, if that's the secret, please fwd me more of them, and I'll keep them in my SMS outbox too!

And finally, this stylo guy with his cool move. Does anyone remember the Cantona kung-fu kick? Lol

Maple story is a gd way to destress!

After reading so many entries bout how we should train harder and work towards the gold, i cannot help but agree. But i can't help but add an anticlimax post. As Promos are coming in like 10 wks time, the best way to destress is by playing no brainer games like maplestory! You may think that canoeists are all gym and no play but I can sincerely say this is not the case. Pple like Shenglin, Paul and even myself are able to manage our time in such a way that Maplestory is a part of our daily lives. Wat can be more satisfying den going around ksing(kill stealing) noobs or getting rid of hordes of snails?

Its no point in training so hard in the gym when u can't whack anyone as u will be punished or caught by police. So its better to train hard in Maple and whack up snails and cute little mushrooms. The feeling you get from exterminating mushrooms and hearing them squeal or cry when they die and disappear is invigorating...If anyone decides to start playing, plz do inform me so tat we can spend meaningful time killing snails and muchrooms and the occasional balrog together!

Dota and CS is for noobs...join the Maple gang! Alternatively, you can play Gunbound...whereby i'm sure shenglin and myself will patch our GB to play with you.

Anyway, the pic above is not me. I am more pro. I dun whack snails...

PS: Plz inform us if any other canoeists are joining the New Urban Male biatelon.

As of today, only Peter and Kane, Shenglin and Kenneth Kong have sumbitted application forms. But dun expect to win if u do decide to sign up...coz Kane and me are taking part. So any other pple who decide to go can just slowly run and canoe and get your free shirt...

And gd luck to everyone taking part in dragonboat next wk. I think it will be fun.

Hilarious reporting in Season

From Issue 10 which featured news about our nationals:

"There were several tense moments
in the competitions, such as the K-2
and K-1 competitions. In the K-1 competition,
Yi Liang was almost relegated
to the fourth place. 1 metre before
reaching the shore, he gave the boat a
massive jerk that displaced him to the
3rd place."

Did you get what's so funny?

Read carefully.

From what I know, if Yi Liang gave his boat a massive jerk 1 metre before reaching the shore....there, uh, might be no boat left!

LOL

wooo

Hey people

Wow canoe nats 06 is over. Really fast how we've progressed from knowing almost nothing about canoeing to where we are now yeah?

Anyway I just wanna say congrats to the j2s for pulling everyone through this season and teaching us the ropes in our canoeing life. yeah

As we embark on another long and arduous journey towards next yrs nats, I hope everyone will be determined and strong to give it all you've got durin all our trainings, no matter how tired you may be. Let's rally around each other to push everyone else in the team to reach their potential, espeically since there no longer will be the j2s pushing us anymore. Let's do the very best we can so that when our turn is over after the 07 nats, we won't look back and regret anything that we could have done differently.

But remember to not ignore your studies as well. I really don't think anyone would like to be retained. yes chiam? At least do well enough to scrape past the promos lah.

Another important thing to remember is that we shouldnt lose interest in training. Yup once your passion and determination to excel is gone, you can bid canoeing goodbye. So when its time to be serious (durnig trainings), go all out and give it everything you've got to improve yourself. When its time to be kok den you should just be kok, like after trainings or when we see each other in the mornings etc. It gives you that little bit of life in your otherwise lifeless life (and maybe it also gives u something to look forward to after a long day of training). yup so to ppl like guoren can u don't react so violently when i try to do something to u? tnx

Anyway here are the pics from wed and friday. http://www.flickr.com/photos/70213509@N00/sets/72157594200689473/
yup i have loads more pics so if you want jus ask individually for more. Have fun

Yet another 2006 nationals post, but..

2006 Inter-school Canoe National Championships was indeed a memorable experience as many put it. To put it straight, I know that many, myself included, were disappointed that we scored a third, if not happy that we didn't lose that title (not that we were close to losing it anyway).

I know this is going to sound very blunt, especially since the more morally correct post i should be blogging about now is that of encouraging words to spur us on to train for next year's competition. But I think many of us here have already painted that colourful picture of "bronze is not so bad" and "lets go for Gold next year", so much so that it has nearly become cliche. Someone, the bad guy, has to spell out the actual facts.

What I want to say is we were indeed aiming for the best, if not 2nd best, and the hurtful truth remains is that we failed. We did not claim silver as we had wanted, and I know that for that, deep down inside, many of us are hurting. There's nothing wrong with feeling the pain of disappointment, but, let me ask, why are you feeling so? Are you disgruntled that the hard work you put in was all for naught? That all the time you spent telling yourself to "work harder" was all wasted?

We lost to National Junior College Canoeing, and not just in the competition, but also in terms of devotion, commitment, discipline. I'm not denying that we have indeed worked ourselves extremely hard, sometimes to the extent that we feel like breaking down. However, the question remains: have we really pushed our limits? Coming from river valley high, most of whose students make their way to NJC, i have no doubt encountered some familiar faces during our water trainings. It wouldn't surprise you to know that the T1 champion for girls, Lee Suling, was a former cross-country from rvhs with that had no connections with our water sport. And she's J1 this year, meaning that she started canoeing roughly around the same time that our school's J1 T1 girls champion Yang Yang did.

Though she and Yang2 never really competed, and though i hate myself for pointing this out, but i think we know who would probably win had both entered in the same T1 race. Our Yang is good, and so are the rest of our girls, but SL (not Shenglin) is the real unbeatable on the water. But what made all the difference these 6 and a half months? Maybe technique, but I daresay it can't just be the mechanics that win you the battle. Those "legends" of training 5/6 times per week every week, eating only certain kinds of food, giving up the "life" you want to live for the "life" that makes a canoeist champion, is not just that. It's real. After seeing what NJC did right after Nationals' Finals, who can really doubt it anymore? It really kills me to see that someone who started canoeing at the same time as I did to have improve so much more than i have. Yet, here in this sport, there are so many of such people.

And these are whom we are contending with on the water. What is the point of telling ourselves "we'll do better" if we don't actually do anything about it? Why are we disappointed with ourselves when we know, deep inside, that we couldn't have denied how much more effort NJC had put in?

If we really want to stand a chance at wresting that coveted title from NJC's hands, then words alone will not be enough. Neither will our current standard of effort. If we want to win, then "all" isn't just a word anymore. It becomes that very thing which we put into each push-up, each pull-up, each step we take on the track, and each stroke we make on the water.

I'm sorry to those who would take the time to read my long post, and I'm sorry for being such an @$$hole for saying all this, but each word typed here rises from the bottom of my heart, and i hope that before you all start hating me, at least give a little more time to consider what i have just written, so i would not have wasted my time typing all these out.

LOL

:: keith ::.. its really over says:
A teacher doing grad studies was doing a study testing the senses of first graders by using a bowl of lifesavers.
He gave all the children the same kind of lifesavers one at a time, and asked them to identify them by color and flavor.
The children began to say:
Red................cherry,"
Yellow.............lemon,"
Green..............lime,"
Orange.............orange."

Finally the teacher gave them all honey lifesavers. After eating them for a few moments none of the children could identify the taste. Well," he said "I'll give you all a clue, It's what your mother may call your father at times."

One little girl looked up in horror, spit her lifesaver out and yelled:
"Oh My God!!!! They're assholes!"

A blond gets a job at a toy factory making Tickle Me Elmos. The foreman takes her to her station and gives her instructions, then goes back to his office An hour later, he looks out and sees the line is halted. He goes down the line looking for the holdup. When he comes to the blonde's station, he sees she has a big pile of Elmos. He watches her take 2 marbles, drop them in a little bag and carefully sew the bag between Elmo's legs

He rolls his eyes and says, "Let's go over this one more time. Your job is to give Elmo two... test... TICKLES!"

thoughts

canoe nationals this year was really a wonderful experience.

it started off for the guys' team with jquek breaking his paddle and probably climaxed around where looloo won his c1 race. when the dust settled, we ended up bagging the bronze.

when i mentioned to my friend that we bagged the bronze, he gave me a weird look. perhaps he thought that having the reputation of being one of the craziest people in school, we ought to be deserving a gold. but really, to someone not familiar with the canoeing scene, third is an achievement to be proud of, and its an achievement we are really proud of(our cheer really said it all).

while i continued explaining that we were actually aiming for silver, he gave me another weird look. "why aim for silver when u can aim for gold?" and then i thought: hmm, why not? while canoeing nats 2006 has ended, next year's nats is still far away. let us go for gold next year. let us put in every ounce of energy we have during training. let us give it our best shot. let us defeat the previously 'undefeatable' schools. let us hold our hands up in triumph in 365 days times.

for raffles canoeing, this year was a victory. we came in as the underdogs and for the many years that nj or hc seemed virtually unbeatable. this year we were inches away from them. that is our victory. for we have shown that we are close, or even the same, their standard. may we continue down this victory path the j2s have shown us. may we one day overtake them and end up as the unbeatables.

raffles row!

on a more random note, lanning 8 hours in a row can make u feel really sick.

As the dusk falls on this canoeing season, let us paddle towards a new horizon.

Keep the Raffles flag flying high as we surge towards the new dawn, everyone!

thus ends canoe nationals 2006, thus begins canoe nationals 2007

while half the j1 team is prob over at bernard's hse enjoying themselves, i shall take some time here to try to keep this blog updated..

canoe nationals 'a' division 2006's prob the event that's holding dear to our hearts and minds for it was only ytd that the finals was held.. tho we can sae tt many surprises occured, nevertheless, we did well and we gave hc a run for their money.. (juz 2 more pnts i think)

rmbing the unite cheer we did after the prize presentation, the line "we'll fight in the sun, we'll fight in the rain" did present itself meaningful and applicable to the dae when the sun and rain took turns to reign over macritchie..

2 bronzes this year, all we can sae is we did well and so did the other schools.. there's nth to regret or nth to be ashamed of..

guess it's hard to present all that happened in an entry here.. the real memories need not to be spoken of and i believe it's etched in every single one of the raffles canoeists' hearts.. never to be forgotten..

till next year, we fight, we presevere, we row.. our chances next year's juz as good if not better.. and we'll bring yet another glorious year to rj canoeing..

many talents remain hidden and nirvana remain within reach..

so we'll work hard and next year it's no longer abt proving and giving others a run for their money.. it's actually gg out to show them wad we've got.. they've got the experience but we've got the heart and soul for canoe..

hmmm, as with the end of every major chapter, there'll be a list of ppl we'll like to acknowledge and thank..

jiaolian for obvious reasons.. hahax.. the dinner last nite was funny

the j2 batch for being so nice to us (or so they claim.. haha juz kidding).. from the first dae we small puny little 16 year olds who can do little or no pull ups to the big, muscular, egoistic guys who owns at pull ups.. they cont to show to us the spirit of raffles canoe and the bond between the j2 team did present itself lethal as we begin to be infected with this sense of belonging as well.. it is indeed true that the j1 team has grown significantly.. from the nite of the camp when we try to work out the problems within the team and to deal with our lack of cooperativity and selfishness.. we haf now become a bunch of screwed up but crazily bonded batch of ppl.. yay.. and this we realli got to thank the j2s..

mr. go and mr. koh for supporting us and doing the admin and parenting work..

the girls team for standing our nonsense..

and ourselves.. definitely..

personally, i feel it's been fun this half year plus.. the new support and friendships forged definitely exceeds the muscles gained.. yupx, so thx to u guys out there..

so let's keep the flame and passion gg for this sport.. and like wad edwin said, "the dream is still alive" =)

Yo mama so fat when her beeper goes off, people thought she was backing up.

Yo mama so fat she went to the movies and sat next to everyone.

Yo mama so fat when you get on top of her your ears pop!

Yo mama so fat people jog around her for exercise.

Yo mama so fat the highway patrol made her wear "Caution! Wide Turn"

Yo mama so fat when she steps on a scale, it read "one at a time, please"

Yo mama so fat when she goes to an amusement park, people try to ride HER!

Yo mama so fat she's got more Chins than a Hong Kong phone book!

Yo mama so fat she's on both sides of the family!

Yo mama so fat when she fell over she rocked herself asleep trying to get up again.

I am buying 3 new boats for the team!

Because other schs like SJI are lucky to have draco malfoys who buy NELOs for the canoe team, i decided to take out my savings and buy RJC 3 new boats. See below for pics of the boats i propose to get for the team...suspense suspense...

woohoo...styrofoam boats. lightweight and almost uncappable...easy to self rescue. Kids from Figi are so lucky and cool to have these...

Cardboard boats. Just go to J8 NTUC and ask the cashier where they keep the cardboard boxes. Super cool looking...but den again if u ever capsize, you never know if the boat will ever be able to float again.

Last but no least, a boat made from a gigantic pumpkin. Uber cool! High source of vitamins B, D and E, with beta carotene that fights cancer. Downside-> Later the crocodile hungry come eat your boat den u ggxx no rm. Anyway, if u dun think the boat's cool, at least the hat the guy is wearing is.

See i so generous...coz i am nice.

Blonde jokes

Blonde Car Accident
One day, while a blonde was out driving her car, she ran into a truck. The truck's driver made her pull over into a parking lot and get out of the car.He took a piece of chalk and drew a circle on the pavement. He told her to stand in the middle and not leave the circle.Furious, he went over to her car and slashed the tires. The blonde started laughing. This made the man angrier so he smashed her windshield. This time the blonde laughed even harder.Livid, the man broke all her windows and keyed her car.The blonde is now laughing hysterically, so the truck driver asks her what's so funny. The blonde giggles and replies, "When you weren't looking, I stepped out of the circle three times!"

Q: How do blonde braincells die?
A: Alone.

Q: How do you amuse a blonde for hours?
A: Write 'Please turn over' on both sides of a piece of paper

Guess who knows the state capitals?
A dumb blonde was bragging about her knowledge of the state capitals of the United States. She proudly announced, "go ahead, ask me any of the capitals, I know all of them."A red head said, "O.K., what's the capital of Wyoming?" The blonde replied, "Oh, that's easy, 'W'."

Your kid has been kidnapped
A blonde, out of money and down on her luck after buying air at a real bargain, needed money desperately. To raise cash, she decided to kidnap a child and hold him for ransom. She went to the local playground, grabbed a kid randomly, took her behind a building, and told her, "I've kidnapped you."She then wrote a big note saying, "I've kidnapped your kid. Tomorrow morning, put $10,000 in a paper bag and leave it under the apple tree next to the slides on the south side of the playground. Signed, A blonde." The blonde then pinned the note to the kid's shirt and sent him home to show it to his parents. The next morning the blonde checked, and sure enough, a paper bag was sitting beneath the apple tree. The blonde looked in the bag and found the $10,000 with a note that said, "How could you do this to a fellow blonde?"

Blondes change a lightbulb
Three blondes are attempting to change a light bulb. One of them decides to call 911:
Blonde: We need help. We're three blondes changing a light bulb.
Operator: Hmmmmm. You put in a fresh bulb?
Blonde: Yes.
Operator: The power in the house in on?
Blonde: Of course.
Operator: And the switch is on?
Blonde: Yes, yes.
Operator: And the bulb still won't light up?
Blonde: No, it's working fine.
Operator: Then what's the problem?
Blonde: We got dizzy spinning the ladder around, and we all fell and hurt ourselves.

The blonde test taker
A blonde reports for her university final exam which consists of mainly true and false questions. She takes her seat in the examination hall, stares at the question paper for five minutes, and then in a fit of inspiration takes her purse out, removes a coin and starts tossing the coin and marking the answer sheet: true for heads and false for tails. Within thirty minutes she is all done, whereas the rest of the class is still working furiously.During the last few minutes, she is seen desperately throwing the coin, swearing and sweating. The moderator, alarmed, approaches her and asks what is happening."I finished the exam in a half hour," she replies. "Now I'm rechecking my answers."
